Right amount, wrong account: 60% of overdrawn Aussies had the cash to cover their bills
Cost of living pressures and fragmented bank account set ups are driving widespread "bill shock" among young Australians, even as four in five actively try to manage their expenses.

According to new research*, 58% of 18-35 year olds experienced bill shock in the last year, with half missing or paying a bill late, twice the rate of those over the age of 55.
However, internal customer data*** from Australia's leading digital bank, Up, reveals that in 60% of overdrawn cases, customers had enough money elsewhere in Up to cover the expense, it was just in the wrong account.
And it's coming at a cost: almost half (49%) of young Aussies were stung with a late fee in the past 12 months, with over a quarter paying more than $50 in avoidable penalties.
To lighten the mental and financial load, Up has launched Essentials, an intelligent feature designed to automate bill management and ensure money is where it needs to be well before a due date hits.
Built directly into the Up app, Essentials calculates customers' upcoming costs, spreads them across multiple pay cycles, and automatically moves the required funds each payday. Money is kept in a separate, dedicated account with its own card and account details, so bill money is isolated from day-to-day spending.
"Most Aussies don't miss bills because they're careless, they miss them because bill management is relentless," said Seamus Liddy, Head of Product at Up.
"Young people are trying to do the right thing by setting money aside in different accounts, but the mental load of tracking endless due dates and shifting money around is exhausting. Essentials strips away that friction by putting bills on autopilot, so you can spend less time on admin and more time doing the things you love."
Beyond scheduled bills, sneaky recurring fees and auto-renewals are a major drain, catching out 77% of young Aussies in the past year. The biggest culprits?
- Streaming subscriptions (33%)
- App store and cloud services (20%)
- Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) debits (20%)
"Bills shouldn't feel like financial landmines," said Liddy. "By putting all your upcoming expenses in one place, Essentials creates a single unified view so you always know what's coming. No more guessing or surprises, just complete peace of mind on payday."
Up remains committed to rethinking modern banking by designing smart tools that help people to get better at money. Essentials is the latest step in removing financial friction, helping users cut back on admin and focus on what actually matters.
Essentials is now live in the Up app. To learn more, visit up.com.au or download the app via the App Store or Google Play.

***Overdrawn accounts refer to an account ledger balance going negative from previously positive or zero, resulting in money owed to that account. The 60% figure represents all overdrawn account owners that had sufficient funds to cover that overdrawn balance in any other account they hold at the end of the day the balance went negative. Figure is based on Up internal balance logs for 2025-08-27 to 2026-08-26.
