Senior Product Designer

About us

We’re a passionate team of engineers, designers and dreamers reinventing banking. Ferocia is a technology company within the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Group whose focus is on delighting customers with simple, effective and high-quality banking software. Our flagship product is (Up)– with over 800,000 customers who love opening their app every day to build a better relationship with their money: https://up.com.au/about/.

Ferocia hits that sweet spot of having a small company rhythm, with a large company reach and resources. We are proud that the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Group is carbon neutral, community minded, and committed to high standards of corporate governance. Operating under that umbrella allows Ferocia to better pursue its mission: financial empowerment through technology.

The role

We're looking for an experienced Senior Product Designer to join the Up team. This is a rare opportunity to join our small team, and have a real impact on the lives of people. We believe we can take Australians from a place where money is a cause of stress and anxiety, to a happier place where they feel empowered and in control of their finances. Our designers wear many hats and own projects from start to finish — from idea to successfully shipped. Sometimes it's just a few days on a fun feature, sometimes it's months on a new financial product.

So on a normal day, you could be:

  • Finding and exploring opportunities to help us achieve our goals, for every step of the user journey — whether it's reviewing user feedback, conducting interviews, analysing data, playing with a random idea, reinventing the wheel, refining existing concepts, or fixing tiny bugs.
  • Working closely with our creative team (Product, Design, Brand) to discuss ideas, review work in progress, and shape our long-term strategy.
  • Designing concepts and interactive prototypes at various levels of fidelity to be able to clearly communicate your ideas.
  • Solving challenging financial problems by changing people's perception of money, focusing on how people feel and what's a uniquely "Up-way" to frame it.
  • Collaborating with our leadership teams and presenting design concepts to help define our short and medium term roadmap.
  • Collaborating with engineering teams to ship high-quality features to our users within our delivery timeframes — by helping scope, prioritise, review, and adapt concepts as necessary.
  • Working with our Marketing and Support teams to ensure a great user experience at any touchpoint.

Examples of projects we work on:

  • Maybuy / Trackers / Slices / Home Saver — Solving common user problems with a unique approach (interactions, visuals, and copy). This requires great craftsmanship and attention to detail to make a simple feature feel like a game-changer.
  • 2Up/Up Home — Implementing new financial products that redefine how people think about their finances. Requires deep system thinking to map complex interactions and dependencies, to create a holistic experience over many touch-points.
  • PayDay/Save Up 1000/Locked Savers — Requires a great understanding of how people manage their money and use our app.
  • Digital and Physical cards (Zap card) — Requires being comfortable with complex technical problems and how to strategically approach big projects with many partners.
  • ID verification, Disputes, Card blocks — Requires good collaboration with our Support team to understand and address many complex and stressful situations for our users.

Check out the Tree of Up for a glimpse into what we have planned to help people feel good about money.

What we're looking for

  • Experience designing and delivering end to end projects (from idea to successfully launched) — with at least 5+ years working with product teams (ideally on a SaaS or consumer product, and even better if it's in Fin-Tech), or within a digital agency.
  • Mobile experience and domain knowledge — a strong understanding of patterns, interactions, and how mobile technology is evolving (software and hardware).
  • Creativity and craftsmanship — strong interaction and visual skills, with a keen eye for detail to achieve visually pleasing aesthetics — from tiny micro-interactions, to complex multi-step experiences, and the ability to think outside of conventional approaches. We really pride ourselves in the way we present experiences and the emotional responses we seek from our users.
  • Problem solving skills and a strong product lens — the ability to understand customer needs, motivations and behaviours, and to know how to translate this understanding into product opportunities. Being able to think holistically about end to end experiences, and design solutions that fit into an ecosystem.
  • Passion — harder to define, but we're looking for people who have a desire to push the limits, break the status quo, and be at the forefront of where technology is leading us. An eagerness to learn, expand your skills, and do the best work possible.
  • Collaboration and communication skills — the ability to articulate ideas effectively and provide sound reasoning for decisions, and to use storytelling to inform and influence.
  • Basic technical knowledge, especially front-end, and a general understanding of an agile engineering development process.
  • Ability to work with a certain level of ambiguity, and "get shit done" autonomously — we operate like a start-up and things can often be messy, undefined, or change at the last minute. We're looking for someone who enjoys innovative fast paced work environments and tackling all sort of problems.

Interview Process

More details will be provided on application, but all applicants will go through the same stages:

  • 1. Portfolio/career review and intro chat with Sylvain (Head of Design) [30min]
  • 2. Presentation of 2-3 case studies to Sylvain (Head of Design), Anson (Head of Product), and a Product Designer — Deep dive into your work to understand your skills and approach to design. Because we care a lot about beautiful execution, if you feel your portfolio doesn’t represent your skills, we can also provide a short design exercise. [60min]
  • 3. Interview with a cross-functional team (Creative Director, Front-end developer, Product Designer) — This would be a short case study and a casual critique/review of an app of your choice. The goal is to understand how you think, communicate, and get a feel for what it would be like working together. [60min]
  • 4. References check
  • 5.Meet with Xavier (CEO) — pretty informal, and a chance for you to hear the vision from BigBoss himself [30min]
  • 6. Offer

And if you think you have what it takes, but don't necessarily meet every single point on the job description, please still get in touch. We'd love to have a chat and see if you could be a great fit.

Please apply here, and make sure to attach a portfolio or have a link in your CV to demonstrate your skills and some examples of work you’ve produced.
